about

Included *exclusively* with this Bandcamp release is a special Digital Booklet and additional bonus tracks!

'Revolution 1989', released by Gradation Music, delves into the untold story of Of Love and Justice, a forgotten rock band hailing from the suburban streets of Houston, TX. Led by the enigmatic Ferni Lopez on vocals and guitar, with Steve 'Kosher' Doria laying down the bass and vocals, and Eric Siebert on drums and vocals, this three-piece outfit made waves in the local scene between 1989-1991 with their raw and impassioned performances of original tracks like "Compromise," "Lead Yourself," and "Cast of One."

In this never-before released collection of rare studio recordings, live takes, and lo-fi demos, painstakingly curated from cassette and reel-to-reel tapes, 'Revolution 1989' captures the essence of a band that was ahead of its time and remained buried in obscurity for over 25 years, until now.

The roots of Of Love and Justice can be traced back to the ashes of a previous band, the ill-fated Passion Game, which Ferni and Kosher were part of after reconnecting as childhood acquaintances post-high school. However, Passion Game quickly fell apart, and fate brought drummer Eric Siebert into the fold, fresh off his move from Missouri to Houston. By 1989, the band had solidified into its permanent three-piece lineup, with Ferni taking on vocal duties.

What made Of Love and Justice stand out in the local Houston music scene of the late '80s was that they defied categorization. In a city dominated at the time by metal, funk-rock, and blues bands, Of Love and Justice unapologetically carved out their own musical identity. Described by one writer for Houston's Public News as "Buffalo Springfield meeting early Pink Floyd...at CBGB's," their sound was something truly unique, emanating straight from the heart.

The bands live shows at venues like Fitzgerald's and The Axiom quickly gained them a core following, with their passionate performances leaving audiences captivated and craving more. By 1990, Houston Music News magazine dubbed them "one of Houston's hottest bands", frequenting venues like The Washington Avenue Showbar and Dan Electro's Guitar Bar.

However, despite their growing success and interest from Canadian independent record label Intrepid Records, Of Love and Justice never released an album during their heyday. Internal conflicts and differences in direction ultimately led to their untimely demise in 1991, leaving their potential unrealized and their music unheard by a wider audience.

On 'Revolution 1989', the music of Of Love and Justice finally sees the light of day to that larger audience. These meticulously restored recordings offer a glimpse into the raw talent and boundless potential of a band lost to time, yet somehow seemingly timeless. It's a testament to the enduring power of rock 'n' roll, and a reminder that sometimes the most compelling stories are found in the forgotten chapters of music history.
